This amazing museum of modern, contemporary and outsider art re-opened last September after a four year facelift. It has been completely renovated and extended, and now has some 4,500 works of art and a total exhibition space of over 4000m2. This is the latest step in Lille Metropole’s policy of making the best of culture accessible to all, often described as the ‘XXL spirit’.
Thanks to a major donation from the L’Aracine Foundation, LaM now houses France’s most spectacular collection of ‘Art Brut’, in addition to comprehensive modern and contemporary collections covering the 20th & 21st centuries. LaM is unique in the world in bringing together these three movements in one place.
Synergies talked briefly to LaM’s Director-Curator, Sophie Lévy…
In a word, ‘Art Brut’ is raw art as opposed to refined art. It was created by artists who never thought of themselves as artists. They went back to the origins of creation and pure invention, unaffected by external influences and formal culture….
LaM’s next big event?
It’s already on now: ‘Adolf Wölfli’s Universe’ is the result of a major collaboration with the Adolf Wölfli Foundation and the Berne Museum of Fine Arts. It’s a historic retrospective of the first real exponent of ‘Art Brut’ who, in the closed environment of a hospital at the beginning of the 20th century, created his own magical universe. It was a very coherent artistic universe, and very modern for its time.
And in the autumn we’ll be part of the next Lille 3000 mini-festival of culture…so watch our website for future exciting shows….
Exceeding your targets?
Our first year target was 200,000 visitors, and we’ve already welcomed 135,000 in just six months. With Adolf Wölfli’s Universe, we easily expect to exceed a quarter of a million in our first year. The majority come from the region, but we are seeing increasing numbers from the rest of France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Are you from the North?
No, from Paris and I came here in 2009. I was attracted by the extra energy of this region, and the way the public and private sectors work together hand-in-hand and have the will to achieve something. The economic world is so close to the arts here. And they recognise they need the arts to continue to develop the region’s economy.
LaM as an event venue?
LaM is a very welcoming place for events. It’s ideal for a reception for 300-400 people. We also have an auditorium for 100. We have events here almost every weekday night. It again demonstrates the incredible vitality of the business world in the region and they way they use their cultural environment. My advice; do come, but book early!
