After Lille 2004, European Capital of Culture, here is Lille Métropole 2020, World Capital of Design. For a few years now, our territory has affirmed the ambition to be a large European region focused on innovation. Lille is the first French city to obtain the title awarded by the World Design Organization. Lille Métropole 2020, World Capital of Design aims to propel the metropolis in a great dynamic, popular but that will also contribute to economic development.
Beyond the 1,600 designers that count the territory, the project will involve a broad mobilization of local actors: entrepreneurs, cultural communities, politicians, citizens, universities and schools. The previous World Capitals of Design were successively Turin (2008), Seoul (2010), Helsinki (2012), Cape Town (2014) and Taipei (2016). In 2018, Mexico will carry this title. Lille was elected after a long period of selection. Since last spring, the city of North remained in the competition with Sydney. Confronted by international competition, Lille European Metropolis has showcased an innovative and time-honored project. The project’s ambition to make Design the engine of change in all sectors that govern the city (economy, social, culture, environment and development), convinced the jury. The aim is to draw, make and experience a fairer, more beautiful and a more virtuous world through design.
But in concrete terms, what will this World Capital event mean for the region? « From now on, every project carried out by the municipality will have a design dimension, from tramway trains to street lights, as well as the big architectural projects, such as the Olympic swimming pool of Saint Sauveur, or the future headquarters of the City Hall, » emphasizes Lille Design’s Director. After Mexico City, elected World Capital for 2018, Lille Metropole now has two years to initiate the implementation of its events program.
During these two years, the European Metropole of Lille plans to organize 4 events gathered around 3 issues:
- What is Design?
- How has design transformed our society and our territory?
- How do experiences feedback from international best practices continue to inspire our Eldorado?
In order to carry out the overall project, Lille has created the first “Republic of Design” gathering economics actors like anthropologists, sociologists, citizens, town planners, community representatives. Its mission: bring out ideas called “Proof of Concept” which will generate projects that will be tested and modeled.
Large investments will certainly be needed, the year 2020 will be framed by an opening and closing ceremony. Lille has always managed this type of events, as we have seen with the title of European Capital of Culture. During this event is more than 9 million of visitors that were hosted in the city.
There is no doubt that in 2020 Lille’s influence will be international and that all design enthusiasts will be keen to come to the capital of Flanders and its region. Stay Tuned…
